WebThe shoebill is a fish eater. Flamingos have a highly specialized method of feeding, which has its closest parallel in certain whales. The inside of the mandibles carries a series of fine hairlike plates that act as filters when water is sucked into the mouth and then expelled. The head is held with the forehead downward. WebRecordings of shoebill vocalisations are also used to create a sense of natural environment while the chicks are feeding. Currently, there are five chicks in the facility. Three were spares picked up from nests where there were two eggs. These chicks, and their siblings which remained in the wild, are healthy and growing well.
